Western stone & brick Country House, Rapid City, SD

Inspired by historic lodges in the National Parks and the work of the English architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, this new rustic gray limestone house is located at the base of the Black Hills in South Dakota. Dramatic views of the landscape on the south side of the house are enjoyed from the double-high family room and the many terraces.  The exterior trim has accents of hand-molded Virginia brick and stained cedar.

The house has an open, multi-leveled, plan, which takes advantage of the sloping site and creates an informal, interconnected series of spaces, perfectly suited to the lifestyle of the owners and their children. The interior of the house is warm and spare with natural fir beams and stone fireplaces. The cherry paneling has details inspired by Lutyens as well as the Arts & Crafts designers Baillie Scott and Greene & Greene.

Felhandler/Steeneken Architects selected contemporary furnishings to create a spare and uncluttered modern version of the English Country House.
