English Arts & Crafts House, Westchester County, NY
In a traditional/transitional neighborhood, our clients needed to build a larger house for their growing family. They wanted a house that would fit in with the older traditional styles in the community that dated from the 1920s, but also a house that would incorporate the latest techniques of energy efficiency. The clients wanted a modern spare aesthetic for the interiors.
This English Arts & Crafts revival style design was our solution to their wishlist. The heating and air-conditioning system uses a ground source geothermal system utilizing 9 wells drilled to 600 ft. deep which are buried under the front lawn. Heating is provided by radiant tubing located under the wood flooring. An array of photovoltaic solar panels is mounted on the south facing rear roof and the building is very efficiently insulated with icynene open cell spray foam insulation.
The simplicity of the English Arts & Crafts style allowed the house interior to have a serene contemporary feel that blends with the exterior without being overtly referential. The rooms are airy and full of natural light from the oversized windows. The U shaped footprint of the house allows for a lovely private terrace in the rear.
